mmhmm for Mac 2.1 beta: Record, playback and share in new ways

On air in, 3, 2, 1! We’re inviting you to beta-test the time-bending recording and playback features we demoed to you during mmhmm Summer with the mmhmm for Mac 2.1 beta release. Record yourself in chunks until you make that perfect presentation. Playback the takes you love best, or switch mid-talk into live mode. Share a link to a recording that gives your viewer control over when and how to watch.

As ever, we like to release new features to a smaller group before we unleash them on the wider public, so download the beta if you want to be the first to test them out. Here’s a closer look at what you get to try.

Discover a new way to record with the mode bar

In the beta version, we've made some changes to the layout—the new mode bar, which sits between the main screen and the slide tray, offers four modes to choose from.

Edit

In the default Edit mode, you can create, move around, and change slides, room, and presenter settings—this is the standard mmhmm you may already know (and love).

Record

For you early adopters of mmhmm, the Record button that used to be on the upper left corner has moved to the mode bar. The new Record mode gives you two options—capture the whole presentation at once or record a chunk of the presentation. Recording your presentation all the way through will save your performance as a take for each slide. If you’d rather perfect the talk attached to a single slide, or if you flubbed a line and want to redo one portion of your talk, you can punch-in takes for a single slide. There’s no limit to the number of takes you can record.

Playback

Once you’ve recorded your best takes, the mode bar will add the Playback mode, where you can review your recordings in sequence to make sure everything flows the way you want it to. You can also use Playback mode to switch between pre-recorded Takes and live presentation. Supercharge time! (This is the trick Phil demonstrated in the mmhmm Summer keynote where he was on screen live with a recorded version of himself.)

Publish

Ready to share your recorded presentation? The Publish mode appears on the mode bar once you have made at least one recording. Now you can have both a recording in an mmhmm player and an mp4. Hit Publish to create the interactive recording link, or choose Save as Video File to create an mp4.

One update to an existing feature: to better describe how we see presets being used, we’ve renamed them to Scenes. Their power to customize the layout of individual slides and groups of slides remains the same, however—more detailed how-tos on scenes will be coming soon.

How to download the beta

To install the beta version:

  • If you haven’t already done so, download and install mmhmm for Mac.
  • Check for updates to make sure you have the latest version installed.
  • Select the "Join the mmhmm Beta" option from the mmhmm menu.

Let’s perfect this take

We want the design to work for your needs, so we would love to hear about how you’re using these new features and what you’d like to see us do differently. We’ve been blown away by the creative directions our users have taken mmhmm in, and we want to learn from you. Your feedback helps us make mmhmm better, so email us at iwant@mmhmm.app to let us know what you think.
